Building a better Paywall

By Anika, our Cool Nerd Queen Kachingler – Social Media Marketing Manager, located in Bremen, Germany

On Wednesday 09/14/11 I listened to a webinar held by Gigaom Pro and PayPal about the topic “Building a Better Paywall: Monetizing Digital Content“. David Card from the Company Gigacom moderated the session. The main topic was how to build a better paywall and understand your audience better. Card asked questions of Paul Sweeting, principal analyst at Gigacom, and Carey Kolaya, senior director for digital goods at PayPal.

During the last 10 years, the revenue of the newspapers dropped for more than 25%. So it is more important than ever, to understand the audience and its needs.

Unique Visitors vs. Page Views

They presented a very interesting study about the segmentation of users. Of course, it is important to have unique visitors in general, by the monthly view of it they are the majority but more important is the number of fans. Monthly unique fans are not very much, but if you look at the page views instead of the unique ones, the Fans score the highest number.

Itsy Bitsy Micropayments through Kachingle starting at 1¢

Starting Oct 1, 2011, we now pay out the earnings to Kachingle-enabled sites starting at 1¢.

Why?

Well, one reason is because we can.  And we couldn’t think of a good reason to hold the money since our Kachinglers have made these voluntary contributions to the sites, not to us.  We believe that no matter how small, these contributions should be delivered to the sites as soon as possible, and not be subject to a monetary threshold.

Another reason is that we think it is fantastically cool to be the first internet micropayment service to deliver itsy bitsy micropayments efficiently (and hey if we aren’t the first, please let us know!).

The Color Code of Kachingle

KAchingle COlor COde

By Anika, our Cool Nerd Queen Kachingler – Social Media Marketing Manager, located in Bremen, Germany

Many things in our lives use colors as a signal code. In the bug world, animals that are striped in black and yellow are dangerous. You know that you shouldn’t eat red mushrooms with white dots, because they are poisonous. But there are also colors, where you know, that this is a tasteful fruit, like the red of strawberries. Human-made signals are the traffic light. They are internationally the same, no matter if you are in Africa, Europe or America. We are used to this color code and it works well. » Read more

In Memoriam: Robin Meyer-Lucht, founder of Carta.info [1973-2011]

A leading German blogger, net politician, and economist, Robin Meyer-Lucht, died a few days ago.  Robin was a witty and  kind person;  an an inspiring leader as the founder of Carta.info.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Robin as he was an early adopter and promoter of social payments.  A highlight of my trip to Germany in June 2010 was meeting Robin in person, along with our colleague Ansgar Werner (e-book news and krautfunding.net) at the famous German Federal Press House (Bundespressekonferenz) in Berlin.  I remember vividly the lively conversation that Robin, Ansgar and I had regarding internet business models.

Robin was one of the few people that has ever complimented me on having the will to start Kachingle.  And he had a great and believable theory about why Germany was one of the first countries to experiment with social payments.  He also wrote the first article ever in German about Kachingle and social payments in Der Spiegel – “Panik ist kein Geschäftsmodell“, published February 17, 2009.

Robin was an early adopter, a risk taker, and a visionary.  He will be greatly missed in the blogosphere, including by many of us in the United States.

My condolences to his family, friends, and many colleagues.
